We aim to provide a comprehensive music education program, meaning that beyond simply teaching music, we seek to make a positive contribution to the life of each and every one of our participants. Since we began our activities in 2005, more than 1,000 children, young people and adults have participated in our programs, broadening their horizons through music and other activities in various communities throughout Ecuador.

Music courses 

Our classes are given by both local and overseas volunteers.

For our music classes, we provide instruments to those who want to learn but do not have the resources to buy their own. We currently offer classes in: guitar (acoustic and electric), singing, violin, viola, cello, electric bass, piano, trombone, saxophone (alto and tenor), percussion (conga, bongo, and kettle drums), trumpet, clarinet, flute, and recorder. 

Our music program consists of two weekly hours of collective instrument practice, plus one hour of music theory – a fundamental part of giving our musicians a more professional outlook and greater awareness of their instrument. We normally offer three cycles of courses throughout the year: from February to April, June to August, and October to December. 

Our courses are offered in the morning, afternoon and early evening from Monday to Friday, as well as on Saturday mornings.

Our aim is simple: to ensure that music is within everyone’s reach!

Dance courses 

We began offering dance courses at Clave de Sur in 2018. A number of years ago, dance courses were occasionally offered through the organization Mi Cometa, but not with any great regularity. As a result, we decided to venture into this new branch of instruction with the help and participation of several volunteers who come to us from dance academies where they train as professional dancers. 

In addition to modern and classical dance, our participants have the opportunity to practice and learn several of the various other aspects that are important to dance, such as physical training  , and gymnastics . Together with their instructors, our students also occasionally organize mini-recitals, as well as final presentations for the closing of each cycle of courses.

At the end of each cycle of music and dance courses, our participants share what they have learned in closing concerts and recitals that are open to the entire community.

Language courses

Although the bulk of our activities at Clave de Sur involves working with both local and overseas volunteers who provide music and dance instruction, some of our volunteers also wish to contribute to the community by offering language courses for our participants.

As a result, our language courses are offered on a seasonal basis, depending on the availability of our volunteers. We frequently offer courses in English, and occasionally also in French and German.

We also rely on the support of organizations like Une Option de Plus, Omprakash, and others that share the work we do in Ecuador on their virtual platforms, helping us to recruit new volunteers to our team.

 Inter-institutional support 

Over the years important alliances have been formed, aiding the growth of Clave de Sur. Related institutions have joined us in the work we do for local communities. More information about some of them can be found by clicking the logos on the right.

 

In addition to the inter-institutional support we receive from various organizations, we also work closely with educational institutions such as universities and colleges, whose students carry out their internships or thesis projects with us.
